Islam, Faith, and Fashion: The Islamic Way Industry in Turkey (Dress and Fashion Inquiry)

What makes a fashionable outfit Islamically appropriate? What makes an Islamically advisable outfit fashionable? What are the conditions, challenges and constraints an entrepreneur faces in this market, and how exercise they market their products? Is the presumed oxymoronic nature of Islamic way a challenge or a brunt? Through case studies and ethnographic portraits, Craciun questions the commercialization of Islamic dress and tackles the delicate and often incompatible relationship between clothing worn in recognition of religious belief and clothing worn purely because information technology is stylish.
This timely analysis of mode, religion, ethics, and aesthetics presents apparel as a disputed and a contested locus of modernity. Islam, Religion and Fashion will exist essential reading for students of manner, anthropology, and fabric and visual culture.
